Gender & Women’s Studies

About Us

The academic program in Gender and Women’s Studies prepares students for advanced academic study and professional careers in government and public policy, non-profit and social justice organizations, educational institutions, and a range of human resource positions in private industry and the arts. The program also fosters the creation of new knowledge in the field of gender studies by both students and faculty.

Drawing on all the academic disciplines, the curricular program expands the traditional focus on women’s experience to include important discussions on diverse conceptions of gender and sexual identity, including studies of masculinity, thus affirming that GWST classes are—as they have always been—inclusive and meant for all students.

In addition to gender-related disciplinary courses taught by a diverse group of male and female faculty members, Gender and Women’s Studies sponsors and co-sponsors many on-campus events, including speakers, panels, venues for undergraduate research presentations, and film discussions. These events are intended to build connections to other groups with shared values and to promote awareness of women’s and gender-related issues at Kennesaw State University. One particular dimension of the program’s learning focus is led by the GWST faculty reading and interest group, which provides opportunities for faculty development around the shared study of gender.

The Gender and Women’s Studies program at Kennesaw State University also extends its community beyond the campus. Faculty affiliated with the program engage in the ongoing study of issues related to the field by presenting papers at local and national conferences and publishing in a wide variety of journals. They co-sponsor activities with public school teachers and other constituents in the university’s service area; facilitate special events that connect Kennesaw State University to the public community and other local academic institutions; and link the work of gender and women’s studies advocates at Kennesaw State University with local, national, and international colleagues through formal and informal networks. Through this sustained effort, specific collaborations such as the internship program and the annual lecture series connect the work of the GWST program with the outreach role of a public institution.
