Women and Law panel on September 25, 2009

Posted on 10/03/09

“Women and Law” was the first topic addressed in the monthly panel series “Women and…”, organized by the KSU Center for Conflict Management and the Gender and Women’s Studies Program. Opening the September 25 event, moderator Dr. Elizabeth Gordon of the Dept. of Political Science and International Affairs gave a brief overview of recent developments in the scholarship of women in the legal profession. Following this introduction, seven panelists discussed their experiences and observations as female attorneys and law students.

Panelists addressed questions regarding gendered expectations of female lawyers, work/life balance, retention and promotion of women, the importance of gender balance in the profession, sex discrimination and sexual harassment, and the value of mentoring in the legal field.

Three attorneys appeared on the panel: Jennifer Dickenson and Monica Gilroy, senior partners of the firm Dickenson Gilroy; and KSU almuna Missy Robinson, founding partner of the firm Nations and Robinson. Four female law students rounded out the panel. They are: Meghann Humphreys and Deana Stom, both current students at John Marshall School of Law and officers in the JM Chapter of Georgia Association for Women Lawyers; and KSU alumnae Naomi Stewart, now studying at John Marshall, and Sarah Vorobjovs, currently at Mercer University School of Law. The students spoke not only about their experience in law school, but also about their internships and jobs in various legal settings.

Panel organizers wish to recognize Dickenson Gilroy’s sponsorship of this event.

This year’s theme was “The Labor of Love,” and it was composed of three KSU faculty panelists: Catherine Lewis (History), Nichole Guillory (Education), and Ugena Whitlock (Education and Gender and Women’s Studies). Each speaker spoke for 15 minutes, and the panel was followed by an open discussion.

January 9, 2008: Simone de Beauvoir turns 100!

Posted on 12/02/07

imageJanuary 2008 marks the centenary of the birth of Simone de Beauvoir, arguably one of the most important philosophers, writers, and feminists of the twentieth century. Alongside gender and women’s studies departments around the globe, the GWST program at KSU will also celebrate the centenary. In the spring semester, the philosophy and GWST programs will offer a seminar devoted to the philosophical and literary works of Beauvoir. On her actual birthday, 9 January 2008, there will be a Birthday Bash at The First Existentialist Church in Atlanta from 6-8 pm (hosted by philoSOPHIA: a feminist society). And, the Gender and Women’s Studies Student Association is planning an event for the fall semester. We hope that the year will prove a fruitful time to reflect on the significance of Beauvoir for us today.
